Ladies luncheon held for former Geary High graduates

Saturday, March 12, 2011
It’s been more than 40 years since Geary Community Elementary School was Geary Rural High School and a group of ladies who graduated from the school in the ’60s decided to hold a reunion.

For most, it had been that long since they’ve seen or spoken with each other. Janet Stennick, now Janet Greene, said she wanted to organize a get-together because it has been so long since she had seen many of her schoolmates and she was curious about how everyone was doing, what they had done since high school. “I graduated from Geary High in ’65 and I just realized I live in the community but there are people living in the community, Fredericton, that I haven’t seen for 40 years,” Greene said. “I just thought there are so many of our classmates who have passed on and it was just sort of an idea that I’ve had for quite a while and I just decided to do it.”

She contacted her friend and classmate, Margaret Armstrong, and they began piecing together the whos and the wheres. “We basically went up and down the roads in our community,” Greene said. “I went four years each way of my age to bring more in. We went over the names and she took half the names and I took half.” Then the phone calls began. The ladies contacted as many of the other women as they could locate, going by word of mouth and references from others. Armstrong said sometimes it was difficult to locate them, not knowing what their married names might be.

“We had about 50 names and there should be about 40 here today,” Greene said. She said as soon as the conversations got started, everyone she talked to became excited about the ladies luncheon. They all met at the Blue Canoe restaurant in Lincoln to enjoy a meal and some reminiscing together last Tuesday afternoon. “Everybody was so enthused about it,” Greene said. “They were very, very excited about it. Everybody is really excited to see each other.”

It was in 1965 when the graduation ceremonies had to be moved to Oromocto because of a lack of space. Two years later, all high school students were centralized to the one larger high school where students have been attending Grades 9 through 12 ever since. “I’m sure we’ll be here for a while,” Greene said at the beginning of their luncheon, after many ladies had arrived. “I brought some school pictures for people to look at and they’re having a great kick over those.”

Armstrong was pleased with the response they received when the idea was suggested and knows now this reunion was long overdue. One of the great things about being from a small community, she said, is everyone know everyone and most at least did know the whereabouts of the others so they could be contacted. “I’m so glad everybody’s wearing name tags,” Armstrong said. “It’s fantastic.” She said they’ll decide afterwards if this is something they’ll do on a regular, annual basis.

For former Geary Rural High student who became a Geary Elementary school teacher Sharon Carr-Mason said she decided to come to get back in touch with the people she knew way back when and share in the special memories she’s had there. “I’ve been following the Facebook site somebody started and it just got me thinking about the good ol’ days,” she said. “I taught there for 34 years and some of the people who are here today, I taught some of their kids.”
